Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney had a special relationship with the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. In a post on Instagram, he honors him and writes about the collaboration with the band for the track “Sunday Rain”, on which singer Dave Grohl does not sing, but Hawkins.
Paul McCartney enjoyed working with the Foo Fighters
McCartney begins with emotional lines: “Taylor’s sudden death was a shock to me and to everyone who knew and loved him.” He then describes the musician, who died on March 25, as a “great drummer”, but also refers to his character: “His personality was big and bright and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to have lived and worked alongside him.”
In recent years, the paths of the Foo Fighters and McCartneys have often crossed: in 2021, the Beatles singer introduced the rock band to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame upon request. Together they performed the Beatles hit “Get Back” to celebrate the award. Macca remembers that moment vividly: “Taylor delivered a powerful drum part. I will never forget that night,” he writes, adding that he is therefore all the more grateful to have shared these “glorious minutes” with him.
There had previously been another collaboration between the Foo Fighters and the musician. Despite having “two superb drummers” — Hawkins and ex-Nirvana member Grohl — the group asked Paul McCartney to drum on their track “Sunday Rain.” This was “Taylor’s Song” because it is not sung by singer Dave Grohl, but by Hawkins himself. Taking to Instagram, he wrote that it was “an amazing session” that cemented the “bond with Taylor and the boys.”
McCartney’s closing words in his memorial post for Taylor Hawkins are bittersweet: “You were a true rock and roll hero and you will always be in my heart.”
Last Saturday (March 26), the Foo Fighters had to announce the death of their bandmate Taylor Hawkins at the age of 50. The cause of the sudden death is unclear, but a toxicological report revealed drugs and medication in the musician’s body.
Foo Fighters: concerts cancelled
Numerous celebrities had expressed their condolences and thought of the drummer via social media, including Perry Farrell, James Corden and Liam Gallagher. The band recently announced they were canceling all concert dates and performances for the time being to “take time to grieve, heal, be close to our loved ones and cherish all the music and memories.”
