Patxi López, new spokesperson for the PSOE in Congress, and Pilar Alegría, from the party

The exlendakari replaces Héctor Gómez, from the Canary Islands, and the minister, Felipe Sicilia from Jaén. Sánchez keeps Santos Cerdán as Secretary of Organization

The exlendakari Patxi López will finally be the new socialist spokesman in the Congress of Deputies. And the Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, from the party. He will replace Héctor Gómez, from the Canary Islands, and she, Felipe Sicilia from Jaén. Both will become from this Saturday, July 23, the faces of the new team of the party with which Pedro Sánchez faces the end of the legislature, the two people he trusts to promote the message of the Executive and combat the attacks of the PP.

official sources confirmed the first two relays in the PSOE, that of the exlendakari and that of Alegría, who will not leave his position in the Ministry of Education, according to what they specified from their environment. But there is another ratified name, advanced by ‘elDiario.es’: that of Santos Cerdán as Secretary of Organization of the PSOE. The general secretary keeps him in his position, despite the fact that he was in doubt in recent days, due to the clash with Adriana Lastra, who resigned as number two last Monday, formally citing personal reasons, due to her high-risk pregnancy. The president thus decides not to dismantle a key area in the party’s structure.

López and Alegría were already part of the PSOE executive, elected by almost 95% of the delegates at the party’s 40th Federal Congress, last October, just nine months ago. He was the secretary of Democratic Memory and Secularism, and the minister entered simply as a member, without portfolio. What the leader does now is rank them up.

The exlendakari, in fact, sits in the direction of Sánchez since he won the 2014 primaries in front of Eduardo Madina, when he was raised by the barons. So he made her Head of Political Action and Citizenship and, after the 2015 elections, he nominated him as president of Congress, a position in which he remained for half a year, until the electoral repetition of June 2016. But that first stage culminated in the defenestration of the leader in the federal committee of October 1, 2016. Later, López competed against Sánchez and against Susana Díaz in the 2017 primariesand was third, but he was the only integration fee admitted by today’s president in that executive from a tough internal strife and painful for the PSOE.

Sanchez named him Federal Policy Secretary, one of the positions with the greatest political content, but, in the past 40th Congress, in October, he took it down a few steps by appointing him responsible for Democratic Memory and Secularism. López did not include him in his first ring of power, despite those who warned him that he had to get more oil out of him. He now takes that step. The exlendakari is one of the few political figures unquestionable in the PSOE, loved and recognized for his political career in the PSE, of which he was general secretary (2002-2014), and as lendakari (2009-2012), during whose mandate, and with José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in Moncloa, ETA I reach its end.

Alegría was already pointed out weeks ago as one of the best values that Sánchez had at his side after the remodeling of his Government a year ago. As the “most political” minister, with more substance, and with attack capacity to the PP, as he demonstrated, they indicated in the last days in Moncloa, when he criticized the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for her scholarships for high family incomes. Alegría also knows the insides of the PSOE well: she was in the Organization team of Leire Pajín first and Marcelino Iglesias later and was head of the Aragonese PSOE apparatus between 2014 and 2017. She was a national deputy (2008-2015) and parliamentarian and councilor Autonomous Community (2015-2019), under the command of Javier Lambán. But her relationship cracked as a result of the 2019 municipal elections, in which she was the headliner for Zaragoza. She won, but was unable to govern the city, and Sánchez appointed her the following year government delegate in the community, until he reappointed her for his Executive, as Minister of Education, in 2021.

López and Alegría replace two leaders with a lower profile, both highly questioned, especially Felipe Sicilia, a man very close to Lastra. Gómez was criticized by the environment of the former deputy secretary general, who never managed to digest well being removed from the parliamentary spokesperson.
