Tom Brady is considered the greatest football player of all time. At the moment there is only one player who the experts believe can take the title away from Brady: Patrick Mahomes.
It has almost become a habit in recent years. The Kansas City Chiefs are in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years. Led by their quarterback Patrick Mahomes, they were able to secure the National Football League (NFL) title four years ago and in the previous season. And the Chiefs could do something in Las Vegas that a team last managed 20 years ago: defend their title.
Back then it was the New England Patriots with quarterback Tom Brady who achieved this feat. It was the third title for their playmaker; Mahomes would achieve the same number with a win against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night (12:30 a.m. CET).
Brady? “Not halfway there”
Despite these parallels, Mahomes doesn’t want to know that he could one day replace Brady as GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). “I’m not even halfway there yet,” he said this week, knowing full well that Brady leads the list of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks with seven titles. Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Joe Montana (San Francisco 49ers) follow with four wins each. Mahomes could now draw level with Troy Aikman (Dallas Cowboys).
But because there is still a long way to go until Brady’s seven titles, Mahomes “hasn’t given much thought yet” to a possible changing of the guard in the GOAT award. His focus is now on the final against the 49ers.
And if the GOAT question is asked again “in, say, 15 years, then I’ll see if I’m close to seven titles. And seven is a long way from then.”
