The former minister is dissatisfied with the course of events in the aftermath of the dismissal of Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne. Dewael was mentioned as a possible successor to the minister, as was Gwendolyn Rutten. The party leadership’s choice ultimately fell on Paul Van Tigchelt, Van Quickenborne’s deputy chief of staff.

Rutten announced on Sunday that he would quit national politics. Dewael is now also drawing conclusions. “I am considering sitting as an independent liberal Member of Parliament for the last months of my mandate,” he told the parliamentary group.
The former deputy prime minister is now awaiting further internal consultations. He is not going to the party board meeting on Monday morning.
