Patient Owen Wijndal is ready to step up: “But I don’t just exchange AZ”

Also at the first training of the new season, Owen Wijndal is still a player of AZ. The left-back has been linked with several clubs but is in no rush to find a new club. “I don’t just exchange AZ,” says 22-year-old Zaandammer.

Wijndal has made his ambitions known to the management of AZ. “We made agreements about this when we extended my contract,” says Wijndal, who indicates that he is ready for a step higher.

Last year he extended his contract until the summer of 2024, but a transfer to Ajax is a common rumor. “I’ve decided not to say too much about that.”

Last year during the preparation, Wijndal saw his teammates Myron Boadu (AS Monaco), Calvin Stengs (Nice) and Teun Koopmeiners (Atalanta Bergamo) all make a top transfer. He himself stayed behind at AZ, wore the captain’s armband for a year and has developed into left back for the Dutch national team.

Wijndal was not part of the Orange selection in the past international period. “But if you do well in the Champions League, I think there is a greater chance that you have a better chance with the Dutch national team,” he hints at an upcoming departure.

Injuries

Wijndal had to miss the decisive phase of the competition last season due to a groin injury. He had to miss the European Championship last summer with the Orange for that reason. “That was a bit different, but I’m fully recovered now.”
