Path to the Metaverse? Disney brings Polygon into its accelerator program

“The success continues! @0xPolygon has been invited to Disney’s prestigious Accelerator program. We are the only blockchain selected. This speaks volumes about the work being done here and where we are going as a company.” announced Polygon CEO Ryan Watt via Twitter. “It’s fun to do the impossible,” he ended his tweet with a Disney quote.

Disney’s Accelerator program, which the US company said was created to accelerate the growth of innovative companies from around the world, this year’s focus is “building the future of immersive experiences and technologies like augmented reality ( AR), non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and artificial intelligence (AI) characters,” the entertainment giant said in a press release.

Only six entrants were accepted for 2022: Flickplay, a Web3 application that allows users to unlock and create videos through NFTs, Inworld, a developer platform for creating AI-powered virtual characters for Metaverse, games or other virtual worlds, and Lockerverse, a Web3 platform. Also in the select group of the Disney Accelerator program are Obsess, an e-commerce platform capable of creating 3D virtual stores, and Red 6, an AR company. And of course Polygon, the only blockchain company in this year’s Disney selection that also has its own altcoin with Polygon.

All six companies will have their own executive mentor from Disney and will also receive support from the Disney Senior Leadership Team. “The Disney Accelerator program concludes with a Demo Day in the fall at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California,” reads the official Disney announcement.

Is Disney Invading the Metaverse?

Disney has recently stepped up its Web3 ambitions and increasingly put out feelers to the Metaverse. Last year, the entertainment giant launched an NFT collection under the motto “Golden Moments”. A few months ago, Disney had also advertised a business development manager with a focus on digital experiences and NFT.

“For nearly a century, Disney has been at the forefront of using technology to create the entertainment experiences of the future,” said Bonnie Rosen, general manager of the Disney Accelerator program. “Disney Accelerator is thrilled to be a part of this legacy, and with our newest class of business, we look forward to continuing to expand our commitment to innovation and continuing to bring magical experiences to Disney audiences and guests for the next 100 years.”
