Past the traffic jams! Berlin’s buses get eleven new kilometers

“Public transport becomes attractive when it drives past slow-moving traffic,” says BVG boss Eva Kreienkamp (59). She can just hope for eleven kilometers of new bus lanes.

The vote with the Senate on these sections is ongoing. In the last election period, the transport companies had submitted a wish list of 50 kilometers. Of these, only half were ordered (28 km) and again only a quarter (13.5 km) actually implemented by the districts.

There are currently 114 kilometers of bus lanes in Berlin. Despite the now additional eleven kilometers, e.g. B. on Neuendorfer Straße (Spandau), Marienfelder Allee (Tempelhof) or Sonnenallee (Neukölln), with the already approved 28 kilometers it would be only 39 off the BVG wish list.

Where can a bus lane be marked at all?

“Two factors must be met,” says BVG spokesman Jannes Schwentu. “Firstly, the obstacles to public transport and secondly, the number of trips per hour – this is basically nine.”

It is unclear whether there will still be combined lanes with cyclists. In principle, separate tracks are aimed for. “However, the space available in the city is not always the same,” says Schwentu.

The bus lanes should apply around the clock so that it is uniform and easier for road users to see. But this cannot be implemented everywhere – it only works without problems if a bus lane is not to run directly on the edge of the road, i.e. there is no conflict with suppliers and parking residents.

Currently, 24/7 only applies to 30 percent of the bus lanes in the capital.
