Passport, impossible dates: the best and worst cities

Sti really turned into an emergency waiting to renew or make a new passport. The problem is felt everywhere in Italy, but in some cities it is worse than in others.

Travel and holidays: Italians don't give up, even in times of crisis

Passport, impossible appointments

The reasons for this great demand are not difficult to imagine: in the meantime, the Brexitwhich has forced many people, from workers to students, to make or redo the document to be able to enter the United Kingdom.

But it certainly makes itself felt too the end of the Covid-19 emergency which has restarted the travel sector in a big way, despite price increases due to war and inflation.

Passport emergency: Altroconsumo’s investigation

The Altroconsumo survey

Returning to the infinite wait that awaits all those who unfortunately have the document expiring, Other consumption carried out a survey in 13 Italian cities on biblical times necessary to have the fateful appointment at the police station. Discovering that there are cities where they spend six months or even, you can’t even book that appointment.

Genoa and Padua worst cities ever

From the investigation, carried out by trying to book on ministerial platform which provides availability at the commissariats present within the province, the cities of Padua and Genoa were the worst overall. The red screen with a slew of “not available” for all possible dates at that time on the platform in fact, it does not give hope for the Venetians and Ligurians.

It is not better in Bolzano and Turin

Things aren’t better in Bolzano and Turin where we are more than four months waiting for the South Tyroleans and almost six months for the Turinese. Between the cities with the most expectation also include Cagliari and Ancona (three months).

In Reggio Calabria passport also the next day, but 85 km away by car

Reggio Calabria? Two months and a half. Actually requesting an appointment in the Calabrian capital, the platform report as first solution three days later, but in a town 85 kilometers away. In other words, the system gives the availabilities of the entire province, but it is unthinkable that the citizen should travel all those kilometres for having such an important document in a reasonable time.

The same happened in Bari, where you could go the next day, but in a Monopoli police station, a good 86 kilometres round trip. Otherwise, the first availability in the Apulian capital was after almost two months.

Bologna the best ever

The bureaucratic machine works better (but not well) in Milan where it takes “only” a month to cross the threshold of the police headquarters. More reasonable timesInstead, they expect to Rome 10 days, Naples and Palermo 15 days. First place overall Bologna where the first available appointment was the following day.

Online reservations still not up to par

According to Altroconsumo, these delays are undoubtedly due to the end of the pandemic, but not only. In fact, too the digital system for online booking still doesn’t seem up to scratch. There is a lack of personnel and consequently the offices in charge are open to the public with inadequate times for the needs.

The municipal councils of several cities have approved motions to ask the Ministry of the Interior to speed up the procedures. One possibility, proposed by the quaestors, is to extend the number of days of the week that passport offices are open to the public.
