Parts shortage by Ukraine affects Volkswagen and BMW | car companies

The companies get parts from Ukraine, such as cables, and deliveries have been disrupted due to the Russian invasion of the country. This puts the problems in Ukraine on top of the disruptions to the car industry due to shortages of computer chips and other components.

Volkswagen temporarily shut down factories in Dresden and Zwickau this week due to parts shortages. So more locations can follow next week. BMW did not provide details on which factories could be affected.

Earlier in the day, Volkswagen also announced that deliveries of cars to local dealers in Russia have been temporarily halted. BMW has announced that it will suspend local production in Russia and will no longer supply cars to the country for the time being.

Many other car and truck companies have also stopped deliveries to Russia because of the war in Ukraine. This concerns, for example, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, Jaguar Land Rover and the American General Motors (GM), as well as the truck manufacturers Daimler Truck and Volvo. The American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has also stopped deliveries to Russia.
