On Thursday, March 9, 2023, Minister Hugo de Jonge for Housing and Spatial Planning and the parties involved signed the Limburg Housing Deal. The Housing Deal states that 26,550 homes will be added in Limburg, the majority of which will be in social rental, mid-market and affordable owner-occupied housing. Various parties will work closely together to realize this Housing Deal.
Minister Hugo de Jonge: “With the housing deal in Limburg, we ensure that affordable housing is accessible to everyone. Because 2/3 of all new construction is intended for the affordable segment. Each municipality takes its own responsibility in this regard. With this approach we keep villages and towns in Limburg liveable.”
Deputy Lia Roefs (Housing, Water, Spatial Planning and Agriculture): “I am proud that we have succeeded in making agreements about this together for the near future. After all, every inhabitant in Limburg deserves their own place to live. A place that suits his or her needs, the phase of life and, last but not least, the financial possibilities that someone has. It is therefore a major task and there are still many things to overcome. We can only realize these homes by doing it together. And that’s how we do it in Limburg: working together. Together we ensure the right home in the right place.”
In Weert, Minister Hugo de Jonge, the Province and municipalities, as well as a number of housing corporations and the Limburg Water Board have signed the housing deal. In addition, the market parties united in Neprom and Bouwend Nederland have issued a statement of support, as has the Woonbond.
Limburg residential deal
In Limburg, three residential regions can be distinguished within the Housing Deal, namely North, Central and South Limburg. It has been agreed that at least 26,550 new homes will be built in Limburg, with an ambition for an additional 20,000. This involves a production of approximately 3,000 homes per year. Nationally, provincially and in the region, 2/3 of new construction must consist of affordable homes. 40% of new construction is intended for middle incomes. In the case of social housing, municipalities will have to step up in new construction to reach 30%, if they now have a lower share, while municipalities that are already (well) above average will have to build more for middle-income households.
The construction plans for Limburg will be further elaborated in the near future. Municipalities, regions, provinces and central government are working together with housing corporations and market parties to accelerate this process. The Province of Limburg supports municipalities in this by connecting parties, sharing knowledge and providing support.
900,000 new homes in the Netherlands up to and including 2030
The regional housing deals are regional elaborations of the National Housing and Building Agenda. This contains the causes of the housing crisis and the objectives and approach for the coming years. The policy is aimed at solving the housing shortage by building 900,000 good new homes by 2030, many of which are affordable. Housing associations, companies and social organizations work closely together to achieve these objectives.
