The only illuminated carnival parade in Northern Netherlands. “And that also makes it the largest,” says a smiling Erwin Weitering, ringmaster and master of ceremonies of carnival association De Kainbongels from Emmer-Compascuum. Friday evening it happened again. A colorful procession with decorated floats and cheerful walking groups passed through the village.
This year there were 46 floats to admire, quite a few running groups and several small decorated vehicles. “Every year there are more participants and the enthusiasm of the public is as great as ever. In short, every reason to be satisfied,” says Weitering.

Since 2015, the illuminated parade in Emmer-Compascuum has been the start of a weekend full of carnival fun in this region. The year before, another carnival association was founded in Emmer-Compascuum. The name was exactly the same as the club that defunct a quarter of a century earlier, De Kainbongels.
In order not to interfere with other carnival associations, Friday evening was chosen for the parade in Emmer-Compascuum. There was no such event on that day. De Kainbongels did not regret it, on the contrary.
On Saturday there are parades in Weiteveen (from 10:00 AM), Zwartemeer (from 1:30 PM), Ter Apel (from 1:30 PM) and Barger-Compascuum (local parade, from 2:00 PM). On Sunday, enthusiasts can visit Barger-Oosterveld from 2:00 PM and on Monday the traditional Rosenmontag parade starts in Barger-Compascuum around 1:45 PM.
