“I tried to loosen him. But everything was flooded, it was freezing and dark.” A slippery bridge in rural Houtem (Veurne) cost the life of Brent Degraeve (21) on Thursday evening. The young man slid off the road in his Fiat Punto and ended up a few meters lower in the icy water of the canal. His parents happened to be driving just in front of him and saw everything happening in their rearview mirror. “I had to save him, but I just couldn’t,” says his dad, consumed with guilt.
