Paprika: confusing fruit with a rich history

Well, it’s something with those peppers. Ubiquitous in the supermarket and a shiny red relative of the pepper. No, not the peppercorns, but the hot peppers, or chilli or Spanish peppers. We will not send the reader around the other supermarkets in Europe, because if you ask for peppers in England, you will look strange. There they are called again confusingly enough peppers . The French are talking about poivrons while the unrelated peppercorn there poivre hot and the hot peppers – family – again allspice . And to think that the Hungarian origin word paprika means the ground fruit, but the word is derived from ‘pepper’. Do you still get it?
