The musician Paleface was his real name Karri Miettinen tells Aki to Linnahti in a podcast about his life without alcohol. The matter comes up when Linnanahde asks Paleface directly if he is a sober man.

The artist answers without hesitation that he put the cap on in 2019. Nowadays, he does not strictly define himself as an absolutist, but the liquor can no longer be said to taste good to the gentleman.

– Even worse, I don’t mess anything up, but I can drink a glass of wine, Paleface tells Linnanahte.

Cap on

Eventually, Paleface delves into the subject and reminisces about the years when he kept the cap tight. The years 2009–2015 were lived at that time.

– Then the saturation point had been reached. It also belongs to this field, that the way of life is quite bohemian, and sometimes some of us can have a little bit of life control, while others of us have something, Paleface formulates.

He remembers that moment well, when the thought formed in his mind that maybe he wouldn’t drink any alcoholic beverages the next day. Paleface remembers that he was at a gig in the center of Helsinki at the time, and there were several beers below.

– I probably drank ten pints easily and I felt that it didn’t get to my head, that there was no point in this.

At first, the artist thought of challenging himself to go a month without alcohol. Otherwise, he did not make many changes in his everyday life.

– I still went to clubs to play records and gigs, he says.

Gradually, Paleface began to notice the difference in his being. There was enough energy in a whole new way.

– That’s what always got me out of bed in the morning.

Linnanahde asks the artist if it’s a coincidence that several hits came out of the artist’s pen around that time, such as the Helsinki – Shangri-La song. Paleface states that the presenter was right in his guess.

– The creative season is strongly related to prioritizing things in life in your own way, says Paleface.

Scoundrel man

Paleface says that he was drunk in nice company. Despite this, in my own mind, the decision to give up alcohol felt good.

– I have always been a good team player and such a companion. I’ve never really had any major problems caused by it.

At the time, the decision was greatly influenced by, for example, the fact that the artist considered the effects of his lifestyle in the long term.

– I’m in a profession where you’re constantly scrambling. It is not an exaggeration to say that they try to pay for gigs partly in booze or intoxicants. There is no other profession where you are constantly drunk.

– Then, when it takes years and every party is at the bar and you’re dealing with alcohol at every turn, it does start to weigh a bit.

Some can handle it longer and others can’t. I faced it (the limit) in my own way, Paleface sums up.
