“Pourbus’ cartographic oeuvre, although less known than his paintings and portraits, is at least as remarkable,” says Dr. Jan Trachet (UGent). “Pourbus is the first mapmaker in Flanders about whom we can say with certainty that he triangulation applied a mathematical method for cartography that was very innovative for that period,” says Trachet.
Moreover, after archaeological evaluation, the topographical content on the map also appears to be depicted very meticulously and is therefore very valuable for further historical research.
