Pack light: Japanese airline rents clothes for tourists and business travelers

Thanks to an initiative by Japan Airlines, travelers to Japan will be able to fly light in the coming year. The Japanese airline will partner with conglomerate Sumitomo, which rents out clothing to tourists and business travelers. With the “Any Wear, Anywhere” initiative, Japan Airlines and Sumitomo hope to minimize their carbon emissions, the website says.

The rental service will start with a trial period of 13 months until August 2024. During the experiment, Japan Airlines will collect data on the extent to which the initiative reduces the weight of passengers’ luggage.

The effect of using the service is explained using an example on the Any Wear, Anywhere website. The CO2 emissions that a traveler would save by taking 7.5 kilograms less luggage on a flight from New York to Japan is equivalent to the amount of CO2 emitted by blow-drying their hair for 10 minutes a day for 78 days is expelled.

In addition, the rental clothing consists of a combination of surplus branded stock and used clothing, which is collected by a partner company.

Outfits can be chosen according to the season, height, formality and color palette. There are Slim, Smart Casual and Mixed styles in sizes Small, Medium and Large. The clothes are delivered to the traveller’s place of residence and picked up again at the end of the trip.

Travelers can rent up to eight outfits for a two-week period. A piece of clothing costs between 4,000 and 7,000 yen (about 25 to 45 euros).
