Owner dumps mama pot-bellied pig with 13 piglets

A little piglet looks very cute, but once the piglet grows into a real pot-bellied pig, they are dumped en masse.

Brenda Devos, Animal Shelter ‘De Cuddle Legs’: “These animals were probably dumped in the woods this weekend. At first we thought we could catch them that way. But the mother is just a little too caring for the piglets. And we we had to call a vet anyway. He came to anesthetize mom.”

Evelien Devriese – Animal Sanctuary Daisyfields: “Mother and piglets arrived here with us yesterday afternoon. And tomorrow at 11 o’clock they will come and get them again. They will go to Forest and Friends, which is another sanctuary that specializes in piglets. Where they will grow up and probably be put up for adoption.”

Pigs and boars are often left behind, says the shelter. “People buy that when they’re little, they’re super cute. They don’t realize that they grow gigantic and turn up their whole garden. There are waiting lists everywhere to take in pigs. And if you don’t castrate or sterilize pigs, then you actually keep mopping with the tap open.”
