FCM coach Titz: “I thought it couldn’t be true”

“You have to see that: We had to have already made a clear decision at half-time. We also had the opportunity to close the bag in the second half and in extra time. And we made it exciting again with our own goals and then with the third one “said Magdeburg’s coach Christian Titz. The coach was also able to smile a bit afterwards about the own goals: “I thought, this can’t be true.”

Kiel’s coach Marcel Rapp, however, saw one “bitter defeat”. Although the guests pushed the ball into their own goal twice, Rapp emphasized that they were by no means without danger: “If you look at it closely, we also forced these own goals.”

Kiel saves itself in a penalty shootout

Magdeburg experienced a rollercoaster of emotions on Wednesday (November 1st, 2023). Thanks to Herbert Bockhorn, the winner of the 1974 European Cup Winners’ Cup quickly took the lead (3rd), shortly afterwards the strong Connor Krempicki took advantage of a hair-raising mistake by U21 national player Colin Kleine-Bekel (11th). Own goals from Daniel Heber (61′) and Cristiano Piccini (68′) brought the Kiel team back into the game. Xavier Amaechi gave the guests the lead again (93′), Benedikt Pichler (120’+2) saved Kiel from penalties.

In fact, Magdeburg could have made everything clear in their superior first half, but KSV goalkeeper Timon Weiner prevented anything worse from happening and the post helped Krempicki’s shot (36′). After the break, the “Storks” appeared at times as if unleashed, but like the Magdeburgers, they missed several chances to secure the decision before extra time. FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann thwarted the chance to equalize again against Pichler (100th). In the end, Magdeburg won the game of nerves from the penalty spot.
