‘Owen Wijndal on his way to the exit: Ajax agrees with AZ about transfer’

The transfer from Owen Wijndal to Ajax seems only a matter of time. AZ and The Telegraph report that Ajax and AZ have reached agreement on the transfer of the left back. The team from Amsterdam has a five-year contract ready for 22-year-old Wijndal.

The captain of AZ has been on Ajax’s wish list for quite some time. He was already polled last summer, but there was no transition. During the past season, Wijndal extended his contract with AZ until the summer of 2024. It was agreed that he could leave the club for a limited transfer fee. That is reportedly an amount of ten million euros.

Now that the clubs have come to an agreement, the 11-time international has yet to come to a personal agreement. If he succeeds, he will be the first reinforcement of the team from Amsterdam this summer. Wijndal has set himself the goal of being with the Orange squad at the World Cup in Qatar. He recently indicated that the chance is considerably greater if he plays in the Champions League every week. “I have expressed my ambition so I think I am ready to take a step higher.”

In addition to Ajax, Napoli and Sevilla were also interested in Wijndal’s services. De Zaandammer went through the entire youth academy of AZ and made his debut in the first against PSV in early 2017. At 17 years and 68 days, he was the youngest AZ debutant ever. He then played 142 games for the Alkmaarders in which he scored four times and provided 27 assists.

AZ will play the first practice match in the run-up to the new season next Saturday. At 4 p.m., the team of trainer Pascal Jansen kicks off against relegated PEC Zwolle. It is still unclear whether Wijndal will still be participating in that match.
