The corona figures continue to fall sharply. This is evident from figures published this morning by health institute Sciensano. The number of new cases falls by 35 percent to an average of 2,392 per day and the number of hospitalizations by 23 percent to 79 per day. There are now 1,238 people in hospital and 87 in intensive care. The last one was from July 23, 2021.

Between 14 and 20 May there were an average of 2,392 new cases per day reported, a 35 percent drop from a week earlier.

The incidence is currently on 371 per 100,000 inhabitants over the last fourteen days.


If we do the daily figures looking at it, we see a lower number of infections every day than the same day a week earlier.

The number of tests decreased by 17 percent to on average 15,403 per day† More than 34 million tests have been performed throughout the pandemic.

The positivity ratio is currently 17.4 percent† That is a decrease of 4.6 percent compared to the previous week.


It reproduction number – based on the number of hospital admissions in Belgium – decreases by 4 percent and is now 0.85† A number below 1 indicates that the epidemic is waning.

BA.2 is still predominant in our country. 98.1 percent of the infections is with this variant of the coronavirus and with that it competes with all others on the market.

Hospital admissions

In the period from 17 to 23 May, daily average 79 people hospitalized with corona. That is a drop of 23 percent compared to the previous week.


In total there are currently 1,238 corona patients in hospital (-18 percent compared to a week earlier). We have to go back to the end of October 2021 to see such low numbers. on intensive care has the grade dropped to 87 patients (-18 percent). There it is from 23 July 2021 that it was still this low.

Vaccinations

In Flanders 5,679,653 people are at least partially vaccinated (85.4 percent) and 5,632,729 (84.7 percent) fully vaccinated. 4,694,509 (70.6 percent) received a booster.
