OVERVIEW. Increase in corona figures seems to be slowing down | Coronavirus what you need to know

The increase in the corona figures that started at the end of September appears to be slowing down. This is evident from the most recent data from health institute Sciensano. Biostatistician Geert Molenberghs (UHasselt and KU Leuven) told ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’ on Tuesday that he expects the peak at the end of this month or somewhere in November.

Between October 7 and 13, there were an average of 110 hospitalizations per day due to Covid infection. That is an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous reference period.

A total of 1,486 people are currently in hospital for or with a corona infection, an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous seven days. Of these, 67 were admitted to an intensive care unit, a decrease of 9 percent compared to the previous seven days.

Between October 4 and 10, an average of 3,099 new corona cases were registered, an increase of 5 percent compared to the previous seven days.

It must be said that there is hardly any testing compared to previous waves. Between October 4 and 10, an average of 13,317 tests were performed per day, an increase of 4 percent from the previous period.

On average, a quarter of them were positive: the positivity ratio is 24.8 percent. BA.5 is still dominant: this omikron variant is involved in 88.1 percent of the cases.

The virus’s reproduction number is 1.03, which is a 12 percent drop from the previous seven days. A reproduction number above 1 means the pandemic is gaining momentum.

In the same period, an average of 9 people per day died after being infected with the corona virus. This is an increase of 85 percent. That figure is very high compared to the others, but that is not immediately alarming because the number of deaths is very small and every change has a big impact.
