Julia Taubitz has been one of the world’s best in tobogganing for years. The 27-year-old has already won the overall World Cup three times. The German didn’t even notice the fourth time.
Luger Julia Taubitz celebrated her fourth overall World Cup on Saturday, even if she didn’t notice it at first. “I didn’t know it at all. I never count,” said the 27-year-old and said: “Nobody had that on their radar.”
The Saxon was initially dissatisfied with her performance in the Latvian town of Sigulda, as it was only enough for third place. This is also why her thumb initially pointed downwards before she realized that she had finished the season at the top, because her competitor Madeleine Egle from Austria only ended up in 14th place. The day’s victory went to teammate Anna Berreiter.
Taubitz celebrated her triumph in the overall World Cup emotionally. “Aren’t we a beautiful couple?” asked the 27-year-old after kissing the crystal ball. “That was the best victory. That was my best season.”
The sports soldier achieved a hat trick with her victory and has won the overall World Cup in the last three years and before that in 2020. Before the last two women’s single-seater races of the season, she leads unassailably with 865 points ahead of Berreiter and Egle (672 points each).
A painful crash landing in Beijing
In the women’s single-seater, Julia Taubitz continued an impressive national series of successes. Since 1999, only German lugers have won the overall World Cup. Her painful belly landing at the Olympics in Beijing, when she fell after setting a track record, has also long been put aside. She came seventh, gold went to teammate Natalie Geisenberger.
The Thuringian by choice then decided to continue until the 2026 Winter Games. “And maybe your career will continue until the 2030 Olympics,” Taubitz once said.
