1973 was a good year for music, and among the numerous albums that are now considered classics, Frank Zappa’s “Over-Nite Sensation” cannot be missing. The experimental work is now considered the best way to get into Zappa’s music. For the 50th anniversary of “Over-Nite Sensation” the album will be released again and expanded with a lot of material.
A classic by Frank Zappa with lots of new goodies
Almost exactly 50 years ago, Frank Zappa and his band The Mothers sat down to tinker with a follow-up to their 1972 LP, Waka/Jawaka. After experimenting with many jazz influences, the next album should focus more on Zappa’s voice and guitar playing. Of course, that doesn’t mean that “Over-Nite Sensation” didn’t play with a variety of other genres.
During the recordings at Bolic Sound and Whitney Studios the doors were open for many different guest musicians. This included Kin Vassy, who became particularly well-known through his collaboration with country singer Kenny Rogers. The guest appearance of the recently deceased Tina Turner, who used her distinctive voice for some background vocals, also remains unforgotten. The result was funk-heavy, with Zappa’s trademark humor and more approachable than the singer and his band’s previous output.
To celebrate the half-century of Over-Nite Sensation, a Super Deluxe Edition of the album is being released. It includes all seven tracks, of course, but this time remastered in a fresh guise. The box set also includes 57 previously unreleased recordings and versions of the songs. It also includes concert footage from shows at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles and Cobo Hall in Detroit, both played in 1973. There is also a 48-page booklet with previously unreleased photos from the album cover shoot, liner notes and essays and much more. In addition to the digital version on CD, there will also be a vinyl release of “Over-Nite Sensation”.
Frank Zappa’s “Over-Nite Sensation” will be available on November 3rd.
