Canadian The Weeknd has hit another Spotify milestone. As of Monday (February 27, 2023), he is the first artist ever to have 100 million monthly listeners. At the end of 2022, the group announced that it had a total of 489 million monthly users. So within 30 days, over a fifth of all active users listen to a The Weeknd song for at least 30 seconds.

Abel Tesfaye’s recent success could be due to the fact that he recently released a remix of one of his most successful songs together with Ariana Grande – “Die For You” from the 2017 album STARBOY.
However, the full significance of the number 100 million only becomes clear against the background of the remaining top 10: In second place, in the wake of the huge success that “Flowers” brought her and that made her break Spotify records, follows Miley Cyrus with over 82 million monthly listeners. Almost 32 million loyal fans separate the 32-year-old from tenth-placed Drake (68 million).
Positioned between Cyrus and the other Canadian streaming giant, in ascending order, are: SZA (69M), David Guetta (71M), Sam Smith (73M), Ed Sheeran (77M), Shakira (77M), Rihanna (79M) and Taylor Swift (80M). The crème de la crème of international pop celebrities, including current viral stars and well-known, eternally successful faces, gather where they are to be expected.
The Weeknd’s current fifth studio album DAWN FM was released in 2022. The HBO series “The Idol”, which he co-created, is scheduled to premiere this year, in which he himself plays one of the leading roles. Lilly-Rose Depp and Troye Sivan are also involved.
