After seven league games without a win against SpVg Greuther Fürth, Karlsruher SC has achieved an important home win.
The KSC came from a deficit after a deficit to a 2:1 (1:1) against Fürth. Before that, the team had only picked up two points in eight league games since the beginning of October and had been knocked out in the DFB Cup. KSC thus gained some breathing room in the relegation battle and moved up to one point behind Fürth in mid-table.
Fürth took the lead with an own goal from Karlsruhe’s Tim Breithaupt (21′). Marvin Wanitzek (36th) and Mikkel Kaufmann (73rd) turned the game around.
Early setbacks – but KSC finds an answer
KSC quickly suffered two setbacks in the first half: Tim Breithaupt scored an own goal in the 21st minute when he headed a Julian Green free-kick into the net. From the 24th minute Karlsruhe was outnumbered, Stephan Ambrosius committed two fouls (21/24th) and also hit the ball away in the second – referee Frank Willenborg showed yellow-red.
Karlsruhe unexpectedly equalized when the video assistant advised Willenborg to go to the screen. Fürth’s Marco Meyerhöfer had overlooked and kicked Karlsruhe’s Fabian Schleusener. Marvin Wanitzek (36th) converted the penalty kick that was due.
Karlsruhe outnumbered by counterattack for the winning goal
The game flattened out a bit in the second half, but Karlsruhe played a successful counterattack when outnumbered. In the 73rd minute, Fürth lost the ball after a throw-in. KSC switched, Mikkel Kaufmann completed the counterattack and Oussema Haddadi deflected his shot decisively.
A little later, Wanitzek and Sebastian Jung even had a double chance to make it 3-1 for Karlsruhe, but missed their opportunity (76th). Schleusener also only hit the Fürth side netting (85′). Gideon Jung missed Fürth’s chance to equalize with a header from a corner, goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck saved safely (85′). The Fürther Armindo Sieb also missed from a promising position in added time.
