Hertha President Kay Bernstein died at the beginning of the year at the age of 43. His club dedicated the cup evening to him – the defeat hurts the team even more.
Second division Hertha BSC wanted to win against Kaiserslautern on Wednesday evening for the recently deceased President Kay Bernstein and move into the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. In the end the hosts had to accept a 1:3.
Hertha’s goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck said afterwards: “We have a lot to thank Kay for. It hurts all the more that we can’t look at the sky and say, we got through to the next round because of you.” Right from the start, the fans of the capital club remembered Bernstein, who died unexpectedly at the age of 43.
Special choreography for Bernstein
In front of widow Eileen Bernstein-Rose, the Hertha fans of the Ostkurve put in a special choreography. At the turn of the year, Kay Bernstein made a post on social media with the words: “Let’s cultivate and strengthen this community in order to gain strength from it that not only allows us to dream, but also to achieve our goals.” The choreo of the host supporters took place under this motto.
The words “We Herthaner” appeared at the beginning of the Olympic Stadium. Bernstein’s dream was for his team to reach the DFB Cup final – but that path ended on Wednesday.
Before the game, Eileen Bernstein-Rose addressed the fans with a message. She also thanked you for the encouragement in the past few days: “I’m overwhelmed by every smallest but sincere gesture, every kind word, every line of your banners.”
