Our Village: With ‘The Vacuum Cleaner’ to Camperduin

From the twenties and thirties, the well-known bus company, the NACO (Nederlandsche Auto Car Onderneming) from Alkmaar, had to endure a lot of competition. One of those local transport companies was Schalkwijk in Bergen. Schalkwijk’s buses ran between Alkmaar and Camperduin and famous on the line was a bus that came into the hands of the company after the war with Marshall Aid and which soon got the nickname vacuum cleaner. Piet Mooij (100) still remembers well why that was. He was the regular driver on the vacuum cleaner for many years.

This series shows what life used to be like in our province. Everyday life and special events have been recorded by amateur film-makers. The historical images have been collected in recent years by the Regional Archive Alkmaar and mostly come from private property. Some statues are unique and have never been seen before.
