There are many good reasons why our criminal law shows leniency in road accidents. An oversight can happen to anyone, with consequences that are dramatic. But at the same time, our judges should be given more options to punish the opposite. In drivers for whom excessive speed is not an inattention, but a way of life. Those drivers don’t have an “accident”, they commit a crime.
