?? Experienced battery system engineer founded a new startup in 2020
?? Battery prototype allows a Tesla to drive more than 1,000 kilometers
?? The startup wants to take away the fear of range from travelers
Experienced Founder
The US company Our Next Energie (ONE), based in Michigan, was only founded in July 2020. The goal of the startup is to develop innovative solutions for energy storage in order to make it easier for the world to access sustainable energy. The founder and CEO of the startup is battery systems engineer Mujeeb Ijaz. Ijaz brings over 30 years of experience developing electric vehicles and battery system technologies to the new company. During his career he has been involved in the development of the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive, the Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 and the Chrysler ENVI project. Most recently, the founder was Senior Director at the US tech giant Apple, where he was responsible for the development of innovative energy storage solutions. Ijaz is also the owner of 31 US patents in the fields of battery technology and energy management systems, according to the company’s website.
ONE equips a Tesla with a new battery
In December 2021, ONE presented a prototype in a Tesla model. For this purpose, a Tesla Model S was equipped with an experimental battery with 203.7 kWh and an energy density of 416 Wh/L, according to the report on the company’s website. With the battery prototype, the Tesla managed to cover a full 882 miles on a single charge at an average speed of 55 miles per hour. Converted, this would be about 1,419 kilometers at an average speed of about 88 km/h. In general, with the new battery, called GeminiTM, it should be possible to cover a full 752 miles (1,210 kilometers) with an electric vehicle without having to recharge.
ONE wants to take away the fear of range from consumers
The problem for most consumers with electric vehicles is the limited range. Even today, most models do not have enough “excess power” to cope with factors such as high speeds, extreme weather, mountainous terrain or towing trailers in real-world conditions, the company explains. These factors can lead to a range loss of more than 35 percent. “We want to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by eliminating the range anxiety that still holds most consumers back today,” explains founder Ijaz. With the ONE GeminiTM, the company wants to remove range as an obstacle for consumers by doubling the available energy on board with the same installation space.
