Oud-Jakhals: ‘I was terrified of DWDD editor-in-chief’ | Culture of fear at DWDD

Matthijs Kleyn, one of the former Jackals of The world goes on (DWDD), says it has also had unpleasant experiences with editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief Dieuwke Wynia. He says against that RTL Boulevard following the Friday evening publication Volkskrantarticle in which dozens of former employees speak about ‘cross-border behaviour’ by presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Wynia.

The story means a lot to Kleyn, he says. “The experiences I have gained with the program are already ten years old. I subconsciously put them in place when I moved on to other things after my time as a Jackal. Reading the article threw me back in time yesterday. I felt the atmosphere again, the tension, the fear of saying something wrong or making something that would cause anger.”

In his own words, he was, among other things, ‘screaming’ at her in front of others. He was “terrified” of her. “The greater the fear became, the more a compliment meant. Sometimes she texted me during the broadcast that my video was fantastic. She put you on a pedestal, but the next morning she kicked you off. Then I had to come to the office and she yelled at me. Then I had to explain how I got it into my head to deliver something like this.”

‘Big Words’

Wynia acknowledged in it Volkskrantarticle that she sometimes used “big words” in the heat of battle. She also said she was ‘stuck’ between Van Nieuwkerk and the editors. According to her, the presenter had ‘extreme rages’, but did not care about the editors and let Wynia do everything alone in difficult moments, she says. “I constantly had to compromise between the wishes of the editors and the requirements of Matthijs.”
