Oscar Otte hopes that the currently injured Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will return in time for the US Open and the Davis Cup.
“I haven’t heard anything yet. There’s still a bit of time until then, of course it would be good if he was there. That of course strengthens our team enormously,” said the 28-year-old Cologne tennis pro at Wimbledon about the team’s intermediate round -Competition from September 14th to 18th in Hamburg. “Hopefully he’ll get fit again quickly, at the latest for the US Open and the Davis Cup.”
Due to Zverev’s injury, Otte was the German number one in the men’s competition at the grass classic in Wimbledon and was the last of seven German players to retire in the third round. The Davis Cup pro lost 3: 6, 1: 6, 2: 6 to the young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev twisted his right foot in the semifinals of the French Open almost a month ago and tore all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle. Then he had an operation. The US Open in New York, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, begins on August 29th.
Almost two weeks ago, Zverev declared that he had not yet ticked off a start in New York. “But I won’t be one who plays immediately if he’s ready for it the first second. If I play the US Open, it’s not for one or two rounds, but to win it,” said the 25-year-old to “Bild On Sunday”. “I’ll only come back when I’m in this form. I don’t know whether it will be the US Open, because I have to play one or two tournaments before that.”
