Despite Stock Market Turbulence: Activist Campaigns Take

to / Alvarez & Marsal Activist Alert (AAA) Update

Munich (ots) –

– Also in Germany more companies in the focus of activist investors

– Top topics: ESG and the issue of energy security

– Main focus is on the industrial sector

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) (https://www.alvarezandmarsal.com/), a worldwide

leading consulting firm, presents the results of the recent A&M

Activist Alert (AAA). This contains analyzes and forecasts of activity

activist investors in Europe. Were evaluated for this as of April 31, 2022

a total of 1,780 European companies with a market capitalization of 200 or more

million dollars.

The current AAA confirms the forecast of a “golden age”

activist investments from last November: despite the Ukraine war

155 European companies threatened, target by within the next 18 months

become activist campaigns. This means an increase of seven

Companies since the last evaluation in November 2021.

Despite all the volatility: Activist investments also in 2022

Despite all the turbulence in the stock markets over the last few months

the interest of activist investors. In January and February 2022 the

Number of activist campaigns up 30% year-on-year. in mar

and April, the war in Ukraine has slowed down activism

which is, however, only considered to be temporary. First “winners”

and “losers” of the market turmoil are already emerging.

“Although we have seen significant volatility in the past few months

experienced stock markets, activist investors are active,” explains

Patrick Siebert (https://www.alvarezandmarsal.com/our-people/patrick-siebert),

Managing Director and Co-Head A&M Germany. “The challenges that come out

Corona and Ukraine crises are high and German companies are showing

perform differently. An underperformance relative to the competition

can quickly become a gateway for activist investment hypotheses.”

However, a shift in maturity is also visible: the proportion of

Companies on the AAA Red List decline slightly to 55, while the number

of companies on the yellow list increases from 90 to 100.

Germany is expanding its position as the second most attractive European market

The interest of activist investors is also growing in Germany: 28

German companies are at risk within the next six to 18 months

Become the target of an activist campaign. This is one more than I have

November. Contrary to the overall development, there is a number of companies on the

red list remained constant.

There are still 10 companies on this list of particularly vulnerable companies

German companies, 18 companies are on the yellow list. In Europe

Germany remains the second most attractive market for

activist campaigns. The distance to France and the Scandinavian

countries continues to grow.

Industry under particular pressure – ESG remains a key driver of activism

The main interest of activists continues to be the industrial sector: With

52 comes from a third of all companies targeted by the AAA activists

Investors sees from this sector. In November the number was 50. Persistent

Disadvantages due to the pandemic and the complex situation of the

Supply chains have become even more difficult as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Activism driven by environmental, social or governance (ESG) criteria

increased by 20% in the first two months of 2022 compared to the previous year.

This development seems to have been stopped for the time being by the war in Ukraine,

or to be viewed in a more differentiated way: “Especially in the USA it is closed

recognize that large funds with demands for faster CO2 reductions

act more cautiously. Security of supply should not be jeopardized

be set. These developments are new,” adds Patrick Siebert.

In the energy sector, the number of expected targets has increased by 60% since November

grown. Here, the AAA now sees eight companies as likely targets,

in November 2021 that number was five. The sector sees itself due to the

ESG focus, the turmoil on the global energy markets and the medium-

to long-term needs to transform a complex

overall situation exposed.
