Ostend tackles nuisance caused by young people with UNDO project

From now on, every minor who commits a violation of the urban regulations will receive a mediation proposal. The project focuses on recovery and aims to have a pedagogical effect. This recovery can be described very broadly. Together with the minor offender, a mediator looks for an adapted alternative measure. This concerns, for example, following a course or training to help out with the city services for a few hours. In this way, minor offenders are given the opportunity to gain insight and to take responsibility for the stated behaviour.

Mayor Bart Tommelein: “Like other cities, Ostend regularly receives complaints about young people who cause nuisance. If these young people are minors, this often has no effect today. To tackle this, the City of Ostend has developed the Undo project. Any minor offender who has reached the full age of 16 will now receive a clear signal that such behavior will not be tolerated.”

Only in the case of violators who do not comply with the mediation proposal, or where the mediation does not succeed, a GAS fine of maximum 175 euros will be imposed.

Summer is just around the corner, and so will the nuisance caused by young tourists. But they too will not escape the dance. And so this summer the peace in Ostend will be preserved a little better.
