Ostend police ask for alertness after a series of lost children by the sea

On Thursday evening, a teenage girl was briefly missing on the beach. She was eventually found safe and sound. This was also the case for the other cases since 11 June.

Anti-lost bands

But the Ostend police want to avoid such incidents in view of a busy weekend at the sea. “With a few basic tips, everyone can prevent such disturbing situations,” emphasizes acting chief constable Hannelore Hochepied.

“For example, it is important that people on the beach agree on a landmark, such as a striking building, lifeguard’s post or lost pole. Also agree well where you will meet again in case you lose sight of someone. – get lost wristbands: you can write down the name of the child and telephone number of the parents.”

“Watch out for spring tide”

Earlier, the rescue services and provincial company Westtoer warned of high water with spring tides at the busiest time on the beach, Saturday and Sunday between 3 and 5 pm. “The sea is not a swimming pool: spring tides at high tide also mean a strong undertow.”

“Finally, stay away from beachheads and piers, and always swim in a supervised area.”
