Osprey: Significant progress on sustainability goals

Osprey, one of the leading brands for high-quality, high-performance and innovative backpacks and bags, is on track to become the world’s most progressive, transparent and sustainable consumer goods brand. As a fully certified bluesign® system partner, by switching to recycled materials, Osprey reduces its environmental impact by 30-40% compared to using virgin materials.

The brand first announced its focus on sustainability in June 2019 with the launch of the stylish Archeon and Arcane series: The backpacks are largely made of robust recycled materials. After that, Osprey came out with a bluesign® product—the limited-edition Talon Earth. It’s made from recycled ocean plastic and buckles made from renewable bio-based methane. This is joined by a collection made from repurposed fabric leftovers from Osprey’s supply chain, as well as a waterproof collection made from recycled fabrics.

In the current autumn/winter collection, all new fabrics for the main parts of the backpacks and bags are made from 100% recycled materials (excluding fabrics reinforced with PE-UHMW for extra high durability). And 65% of the fabrics for the Fall 2022 collection are 100% recycled.

Osprey takes a holistic approach to all of its production, from strict standards for raw materials and chemicals to an advanced factory code of conduct and dedicated programs to extend product life. Osprey checks every single production step in its own company, but also at the business partners, in order to operate as environmentally friendly as possible.
