In the 2nd Bundesliga, SV Wehen Wiesbaden won the duel between the promoted teams and VfL Osnabrück.
The goals for SV Wehen Wiesbaden were scored by Hyun-ju Lee (9th minute) and Robin Heußer (70th) on Saturday (October 21st, 2023). It was the third win in the tenth league game for the promoted team from Hesse.
With twelve points, Wehen Wiesbaden is in the middle of the table. Fellow promoted team VfL Osnabrück remains second to last in the table after their sixth defeat of the season. “We just weren’t good today, we just reacted and therefore didn’t deserve anything,” said VfL coach Tobias Schweinsteiger.
Wehen Wiesbaden scores and dominates
The guests from Wiesbaden got off to a better start in the game. After Osnabrück lost the ball, Wehen Wiesbaden quickly switched gears: Thijmen Goppel played the ball flat from the right side into the penalty area, where Hyun-ju Lee was standing and just had to push it in.
The half-time lead for Wehen Wiesbaden could have been even higher, but the club was unlucky twice. First Nick Bätzner shot from close range, but Osnabrück’s Florian Kleinhansl saved on the line (31′). Then Gino Fechner shot from almost 20 meters and only missed the goal by centimeters (42nd).
Osnabrück only hits the aluminum, but not into the goal
In the second half, Wehen Wiesbaden continued to play well before Osnabrück found its way into the game after just under an hour. First, Wiesbaden’s goalkeeper Florian Stritzel prevented the equalizer when he parried a shot from Mickaël Cuisance (58th).
Three minutes later, Osnabrück’s Robert Tesche headed the ball from a corner. This time Stritzel would probably have had no chance to defend, but Tesche’s header hit the crossbar and from there went out (61′).
Wiesbaden’s Heußer makes the decision
In the middle of this Osnabrück pressure phase, Wehen Wiesbaden was awarded a free kick, about 18 meters away from the goal and half-left in front of the goal. One thing for midfielder Heußer. He ran up and flicked the ball into the top left corner of the goal, it was a dream goal – and at the same time the decision.
The first win after six previous meetings without a win was nice, said Wehen Wiesbaden coach Markus Kauczinski: “It will stay close until the end. It was important that we show that it doesn’t matter to us.”
