Difficult topics are best dealt with with humor, thought Jimmy Kimmel, who addressed the “elephant in the room” at the Oscars 2023 directly in the opening speech. Because after Chris Rock received a juicy slap in the face from her husband Will Smith for a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith live on stage in 2022, the comedian found himself in a delicate situation. On the one hand, it was important to lead the evening in an amusing way, on the other hand, such a scandal, which affects his own guild, should of course not go uncommented.
Oscars 2023: This is how Jimmy Kimmel joked about the Oscar bell
“We have introduced strict rules. If anyone should become violent, the award for best actor will be presented to that person and the person can give a 19-minute speech have: nothing. Might still squeeze the attacker.” Kimmel himself is protected by his personal security – including “Adonis Creed” (Michael B. Jordan) and Michelle Yeoh in the front rows.
The full Oscar-winning bit in Jimmy Kimmel’s opening speech can be seen here:

The Academy wants to tick off the 2022 incident
During a press conference on Wednesday, March 8th, the organizers of the Oscars said, that one does not want to linger in the past, but to look ahead, but this obviously does not mean that you completely hide what happened. Finally, after the bell, there was much criticism of how the Academy had handled the incident. Will Smith received an Oscar just a few minutes later and was able to tearfully thank him for it.
“We will acknowledge all of this, but then we will continue.” Because: “We don’t want to linger this year in the last year.” But it is certainly something that they could and would address in a comedic way, according to the organizers in the apron.
