While John Travolta was hosting the “In Memoriam” segment at this year’s Academy Awards on Sunday night (March 12), emotion swept over him as his speech quoted the title “Hopelessly Devoted to You” – sung by Olivia Newton-John for the soundtrack of the 1978 film “Grease”, with which both made their breakthrough.

Newton-John passed away in August 2022 at the age of 73. She and Travolta had been close friends since filming Grease.

“In this industry we have the privilege of making money doing something we love and sometimes meeting people we come to love as well. […] As tonight is a celebration of our community’s work and accomplishments over the past year, it is only fitting that we also honor those we have lost and who have dedicated their lives to the art, before and after Camera. […] You touched our hearts, made us smile, and became friends we will always remain hopelessly devoted to (“who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to”).” Travolta’s voice broke on the last sentence.

With his speech, the 69-year-old not only honored his close friend, but also Ray Liotta, James Caan and Jean-Luc Godard, among others. However, not all fans were satisfied with the complete list.

The segment was provided with musical accompaniment by Lenny Kravitz, who presented the song “Calling All Angels” from his 2004 album BAPTISM.
