Filming the life of rock musician Ozzy Osbourne, The Osbournes was the first-ever reality TV series in which celebrities opened their daily lives to audiences.
The Osbournes began in the United States on the music video channel MTV in March 2002, marking the 20th anniversary of the series. In addition to Ozzy, it featured his wife and manager Sharon and their children Kelly and Jack. The third child, Aimée, did not want to be in the series and dropped out of the filming.
The series depicted the family’s chaotic daily life at their lavish mansion in Los Angeles. It once became MTV’s most-watched program, featuring Ozzy’s endless swearing, family hangouts and 12 pet dogs running around.

There were also difficult times in the three-year and four production seasons. The series followed Sharon’s struggle with bowel cancer and Ozzy’s recovery from a life-threatening ATV accident, among other things. The series presented at Nelonen in Finland ended in 2005. It has since become clear that several difficulties were discussed behind the scenes.
In 2009, Ozzy said in a BBC radio interview that he had been intoxicated throughout the filming of the series. He used alcohol and prescription drugs, among other things. Following the series, Kelly and Jack also suffered from substance abuse and took turns in detoxification. Sharon has said she regrets letting her daughter Aimée move away from home at the age of 16 because she didn’t take part in the filming of the series.
Despite the unfortunate experiences, the family has returned to the TV screen on various shows over the years: Sharon has been the judge for X Factor and America’s Got Talent and hosted The Talk, Kelly was successful in Dancing with the Stars, and Ozzy and Jack made Ozzy & Jack’s World together. In today’s world full of reality TV shows, Osbournes doesn’t seem any special, but it was the first of its kind and started an ever-continuing trend. The family inspires numerous other reality series such as Hogan knows best, Gene Simmons family jewels and Keeping up with the Kardashians. Osbournes was once awarded the Emmy Award for Best Reality TV Series.
