Number two with a lot of playing time
Stefan Ortega (30) became a treble winner with Manchester City in the 2022/23 season, while his former club Arminia Bielefeld was passed to the 3rd division after being relegated from the Bundesliga. The bottom line is that the goalkeeper, who was born in Hofgeismar, has made 14 appearances, nine of which he kept clean, although Pep Guardiola’s number one Ederson (29) was not injured.
“I’ve managed to play in all competitions this year, made all the FA Cup games. So my quota in this competition is 100%. In the end, the club also gave me appearances in the Premier League, which were also not unimportant,” Ortega told Sky. While Ederson was seeded in the Premier League and Champions League, Ortega was a regular in domestic cup competitions.
Guardiola on Ortega: “It’s a good time to come to the club”
In the FA Cup he had five clean sheets, only in the final victory against Manchester United (2-1) he was defeated once from the point. “I can therefore say that my year has gone well, even if many did not expect it when the change was made. I am happy.”

In the triple squad of the “Citizens”, which is the most valuable in the world, in addition to Ortega and Ederson, Zack Steffen (28), who is currently suffering from a knee injury, and veteran Scott Carson (37) are also available for goal. While Carson got a new one-year contract, Ortega and Steffen’s working papers are dated until 2025, and Ederson’s contract until 2026.
When asked if he would also be going with Man City next season, the ex-Bielefeld resident said: “I assume so. We’ve only just settled in, so it all took time. I have to say that it’s really nice here.” Guardiola, for whom it was the second treble of his career, said to Ortega after winning the final, “that it was a good time to come to the club”. The goalkeeper said: “I think my yield in the first year was quite decent.” He left Bielefeld in the summer of 2022 after five years on a free transfer.
