“Orno”: Pizza, small plates and good show

The Mezcla group did it again. The owners of Casa Cavia, Asadero, and 1636 -also from Orno Olivos and Belgrano- put together their projects with a particular level of excellence. This time they found an emblematic and strategic location for their new branch in Orno. It is located in Guatemala and Gurruchaga, where La esquina del Sol used to be, an iconic bar from the 80s where Charly García, Soda Stéreo, Sumo and Virus used to play, among other legends of national rock. The strategic aspect has to do with the fact that right in front is the award-winning Don Julio grill, with its constant flow of tourists. For both reasons, the place, which also has a super modern and warm architecture, is a hit.

The Italian oven remains the heart of the restaurant, but Detroit-style pizzas have been added to their usual selection of Neapolitan pizzas. It is a version closer to that of the local taste, thicker (half crispy dough) and with a lot of cheese (gratin on all the edges!). There are more classic options, such as pepperoni and fugazzeta, and some more original ones such as roasted pears, with mozzarella, blue cheese, sage and amaretis.

The new Orno is more than a pizzeria. They have an attractive selection of “little dishes”, such as the unmissable whole grilled romaine lettuce, with pangrattato crumbs, blue cheese cream, grated brintz cheese and caper berries (a kind of Caesar salad reversed); and Roasted Carrots with Lemon Coconut Yogurt, Cashews and Herbs. There are also cuisine dishes (roasted chicken with kale, catch of the day with akusai and vegan options). The cocktails and the selection of wines, as in all the group’s projects, is of a high quality. For dessert, go for a sweet tooth creamy chocolate or a refreshing 90s lemonchamp.

On Thursdays and Fridays Orno becomes an entertainment space, with a Drag Bingo -in charge of the great Drag Queen Socorro- and a hilarious and very unusual karaoke.
