Ornella Vanoni: «Patriarchy is made up of fragile men»

ORRnella Vanoni (89 years old) was a guest of the BSMT by Gianluca Gazzoli, the podcast of the creator and radio and TV host. A chat lasting more than an hour in which the singer touched on multiple topics, with great enthusiasm and curiosity.

Ornella Vanoni: «We need to teach respect»

The artist – permanent presence in the cast of What’s the weather like sul Nove – began his speech by recalling the terrible murder of Giulia Cecchettin and talking about the topic of feminicides. «We need to teach respect. The word “respect” would be enough: learn to respect others. But there are perhaps families where they don’t respect each other. The father beats the mother, as usual. The kids run away because they are better off among themselves than at home. And so it’s a big deal. I don’t think just Italian.”

Vanoni said she was worried. «Women are starting to get really scared. Being able to say “No, I don’t want you anymore” is not an offense. Stories end. But there are very fragile men who have built their education on patriarchy. It’s outdated but it’s there. You can also see it in Paola Cortellesi’s beautiful film.”

Milan? «A city that has lost its connotation»

The complexity of this historical moment is, according to the artist, evident. «We are living in a very confusing, very dark, very worrying time. […] We are afraid of what can happen, between the wars, the lack of money, the city that is so stupidly expensive (which you can’t understand why it has to be so expensive… What’s special about it? We don’t know. It’s a mistery)”.

And he added, speaking of Milan. «It has lost its connotation. It is an old, small and cute city. Prettier in winter than in summer. In the summer we need Rome (laughs, ed). But now with all these skyscrapers…”

The confessions of Ornella Vanoni: podcast by Gazzoli

During her interview, the singer (who has just released her new album Revolutionary Calm Live 2023 for BMG) also spoke about his most difficult moments. «I have had more than one depression, I have treated myself and continue to treat myself. There are those who kill themselves, those who survive. I never thought about killing myself. I always wanted to live.”

And again: «I use smoking as medicine, I don’t use it during the day. Before going to sleep, I have to smoke a joint or two, otherwise my brain won’t turn off. I’ve been going like this for fifty years. Otherwise I won’t sleep.” And then a joke. «I had declared that I would need a carer who rolls. I don’t tell you the guys, on the street: “Mrs. Vanoni, I don’t have a job but I roll like God”».
