In the hours before the match between the Netherlands and Argentina, something finally started in Doha – and for the first time this tournament – that something resembled an Orange atmosphere. The fan walk on Lusail Boulevard in Doha attracted a lot of attention and eventually turned into a colorful parade, with participants from many countries.
On a some daredevil after that, most Dutch people still saw no point in traveling to Qatar. The cards were all forgiven, and the practical bumps high. In terms of numbers, the Dutch will therefore have a hard time against the Argentinians tonight, but in terms of enthusiasm, the Orange fans are making a brave attempt today to keep pace with the South American opponent.
The approximately 1400 Dutch people who had a ticket for the quarter-final match gathered in various bars during the day. For example, in the Champions Sports Bar, a pub tucked away in the corner of a large mall, dozens of supporters watched the Brazil-Croatia quarter-final match on large screens. Fans also gathered in other places in the city and their throats were lubricated.
Spectacular decor
In addition, the Dutch played an evening game for the first time, and then also at the most photogenic stadium location in Doha: Lusail. The Oranjebus was ready there about three hours before kick-off on the large boulevard, which leads to the fabulous Lusail Towers, four skyscrapers that tower high above the Persian Gulf. From there, the traditional fan walk was set in motion, against a truly spectacular backdrop.
The interest of the passionate selfie-taking local population was great, and the Dutch-language hits of artists such as Snollebollekes, John de Bever and ‘good old‘ André Hazes was surprisingly well received by the extremely diverse audience along the side. As the march progressed, more and more foreigners joined the procession. The KNVB saw the opportunity and handed out orange lights, which were eagerly accepted by the locals.
