Her career came to an end in a painful way. During the European Championship match with Sweden, the goalkeeper, who has 91 international matches behind her name, had to leave injured after twenty minutes. She became European champion with the Orange in 2017 and took silver at the World Cup in 2019.
Van Veenendaal says that it has always been all or nothing for her: „I have wanted to win every day and I am privileged that I have been able to win several prizes during my career. With the European Championship in 2017 as the absolute highlight. I no longer want to be on the field every day and always have to get the best out of myself. Now it’s time for fun things outside of football. The choice to stop is my own choice and this is the right time for me.”
New dreams
Van Veenendaal continues: „I am grateful for all the beautiful moments that I have been able to experience in my career. Both on and off the field. I want to thank the Orange and PSV for the great years, just like all the other clubs and people who have played a significant role during my career. Finally, the fans; they have ensured that my football experiences have become far more valuable than I could have ever dreamed. Now it is time for new dreams.”
