Now things are really getting started at the 2024 European Handball Championships in Germany. The main round begins on Wednesday (January 17th, 2024).
Who is qualified for the main round?
Germany will meet Iceland, home of national coach Alfred Gislason, on Thursday (January 18, 2024) in Cologne. The other opponents are Austria (20.01), Hungary (22.01) and Croatia (24.01). All games take place at 8:30 p.m. The sixth team in main round group I is record world champion France.
Main round group II will be played in Hamburg, Slovenia and Norway come from preliminary round group D, Sweden and the Netherlands from preliminary round group E, Denmark and Portugal from preliminary round group F.
This is how the main round of the European Handball Championship works
The top two in each preliminary group play in the main round. Points against the opponent from the preliminary round, who also advanced, are taken away. Germany lost the last group game against France and didn’t take any points with them.
The group winners and runners-up in the main round then compete crosswise in the semi-finals. In addition to the grand finale, there are also games for fifth and third place.

The German main round group I will be held in Cologne on January 18th, January 20th, January 22nd and January 24th.
The main round group II will be played in Hamburg on January 17th, January 19th, January 21st and January 23rd.
There are three games every day, kick-off is at 3:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
