“Oppenheimer” is now the most successful biopic of all time

Perhaps the summer of 2023 will at some point be considered a comeback of the major film. In any case, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have even exceeded the high expectations that were placed on the two blockbusters at the box office in these months.

Now, after all the records that have already been reported in the past, it is clear that Christopher Nolan’s new film is the highest-grossing biopic of all time. With box office revenue of $912 million, “Oppenheimer” leaves behind the Queen film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was previously the record holder in this genre, which has been booming for years.

This was reported by “Deadline” on Monday (September 18th). The multi-award-winning film from 2018, which even brought Freddie Mercury actor Rami Malek a leading actor Oscar, was the benchmark for biographical films for a long time, but could not be overtaken by other biopics about very famous personalities in show business.

“Oppenheimer”: Success without younger viewers

Now Nolan manages to do this with a (sometimes complicated, often spectacular) teaser about the father of the atomic bomb. The high-altitude ride doesn’t have to be over yet. “Oppenheimer” was released in cinemas in July and is still showing in many cinemas around the world.

Two facts should be mentioned to put things in perspective: “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a box office success with a much smaller production budget of just 50 million dollars (“Oppenheimer” cost well over 100 million euros) and probably made more profit after deducting all costs have as Nolan’s film. However, the “Tenet” director managed to achieve this feat even though “Oppenheimer” received an R rating. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was able to attract significantly more (younger) viewers to the cinema with its PG-13 rating.
