‘Oppenheimer’ big winner, Ryan Gosling steals the show as Ken: everything you need to know about the Oscars | Oscars 2024

The 2024 Oscars are behind us, and as expected it was ‘Oppenheimer’ who won all the major prizes. So it was the animation that had to provide surprises on the night from Sunday to Monday. Ryan Gosling and Jimmy Kimmel clearly felt addressed and stole the show.

A good Oscar show naturally includes a monologue by presenter Jimmy Kimmel. He took a surprisingly sharp swipe at ex-president and new presidential candidate Donald Trump. “Isn’t it beyond you jail time?” he asked the millionaire present. He also praised ‘Barbie’, who became one of the big losers of the evening: “You just have to be able to turn a doll that no one wanted anymore into an icon.” He consoled actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling: “If none of you win an Oscar tonight, know that you have won something much more important: the genetic lottery.”

Winners

Director Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ has won by far the most Oscars. The drama about the Manhattan Project won seven statuettes, including the prize for best film. Director Christopher Nolan was awarded best director and actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. won the awards for best actor and supporting actor. Dutch cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema also won prizes for his camera work for the film.

The absurdist comedy ‘Poor Things’ by director Yorgos Lanthimos won four Oscars and became the other big winner of the evening. The film grabbed the frames early in the evening best make-up and hair, best production design and best costumes and to top it all off, Emma Stone won her second Oscar for best female lead.

Broken dress

Emma Stone was visibly taken aback by the award. Moreover, when she entered the stage, it turned out that her dress was damaged. “This happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she apologized. She was referring to the performance of Ryan Gosling, who sang that song from his film ‘Barbie’ during the Oscar ceremony, creating one of the highlights of the evening.

Ryan Gosling is still ‘Just Ken’

The film ‘Barbie’ was nominated eight times for the Oscars, but won only once with the song ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish. Too bad, but Ryan Gosling didn’t let it bother him. It’s not surprising that Emma ripped her dress during his performance of ‘I’m Just Ken’, because the actor literally got everyone out of their seats.

Oscar for best documentary for a Ukrainian film about the siege of Mariupol

The Ukrainian documentary ’20 Days in Mariupol’ by journalist and director Mstyslav Chernov has the Oscar for best documentary won. The film is a testimony to the siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in March 2022.

The documentary was the big favorite in this category. Chernov stated in his acceptance speech that this is the first Oscar ever for Ukraine. “I am proud, but I am probably the first director to stand on stage here and say that he would have preferred that this film had never been made,” said the director. “I would like to hand in this statue if Russia had never attacked Ukraine and raided our cities,” Chernov continued. “I would have happily handed this in if the Russians hadn’t killed 10,000 fellow Ukrainians.”

The director said he “cannot change history. But all of us, you talented people, can make sure history is recorded. And that the truth will win. And that the people of Mariupol who gave their lives will never be forgotten. Film makes memories and memories make history.”
