Opinions on the explosive coaching question: “This will be Edin Terzic’s downfall”

The sport.de editorial team put their heads together during the winter break. This time the thesis is being discussed as to whether Edin Terzic will remain coach at Borussia Dortmund despite possible further setbacks despite the BVB bosses’ oath of loyalty. Opinions differ in the editorial team.

Thesis: Edin Terzic will no longer be on the BVB bench in February!

Marc Affeldt: The game plan means well for BVB – and that’s exactly what will be Terzic’s downfall! For Borussia, the league games against Darmstadt, Cologne and Bochum read more like a cozy winter walk after snuggling up under a fluffy blanket with a warming grog in your hand.

However, the cozy atmosphere between Terzic and some of his stars has long been history and so I don’t believe that BVB will beat the underdogs off the pitch with power football. Instead of nine points, there are numerous questions at the end of the three-pack – including who should be the new coach.

Jannik Kube: The title chances in the championship and the DFB Cup have already been lost. If there was a change of coach after the winter break, an extremely unfortunate situation would await a potential successor. This is also why BVB will continue to try with Terzic until the end of the season.

Gerrit Kleiböhmer: The elephant group around Hans-Joachim Watzke decided shortly before the holidays: Edin Terzic will remain BVB coach. It is hard to imagine that this bond between club and coach, which is almost extraordinary in the professional business, will break in the spring of 2024. But it is also clear: If Terzic actually threatens to miss the minimum goal of qualifying for the Champions League, Watzke will have to pull the ripcord at some point in the second half of the season – and persuade Matthias Sammer to take on the role of interim savior.

Emmanuel Schneider: Be careful! Edin Terzic can do the second half of the season. At least last year, when BVB caught up with Bayern by nine points – until the colossal collapse on the last matchday. The fact that there are now increasing reports of players rebelling is a bad sign for the coach. However, as long as Hans-Joachim Watzke holds his hand over his trainer, he remains on board. Probably until the end of the season – including Champions League qualification.

Christian Schenzel: If BVB throws Terzic out a few weeks after the declaration of loyalty, then Sebastian Kehl and Hans-Joachim Watzke should go with them straight away. Because then they would have lost their credibility. Either they go through with Terzic now, or there will be a maximally radical cut in which everything and everyone will be questioned – as happened, for example, with FC Bayern in the spring.
