Open VLD wants to thoroughly redesign national elections | Interior

No more hassle with informants, scouts, deminers or clarifyers. If it depends on Open VLD, the most popular politician on the largest list will become the formateur after the elections and therefore – if all goes well – prime minister. The party will present this position to its members at its congress from 12 to 14 May.

It is very similar to the system that will be applied for the first time in the 2024 local elections. To be able to do it at the Belgian level, a federal electoral district must first be created. That is why the liberals propose that twenty of the 150 parliamentary seats be elected federally. Each party has to put forward a candidate for prime minister, and the largest gets to move.

To make sure there is a government soon, the liberals want to put some time pressure into the system. A formateur has one month to write a coalition agreement. If not, the initiative goes to the second most popular list, and so on. If there is still no government after six months, new elections will be held automatically.
