Open Vld wants a higher base interest rate in exchange for the abolition of the loyalty premium | Domestic

Open Vld wants a broader base interest rate and a broad general tax exemption for savers and investors, in exchange for the abolition of the fidelity premium on savings accounts. The Liberals have submitted a bill to this effect in Parliament.

The Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) does not oppose the abolition of the fidelity premium, it made clear in an advice on Monday. The National Bank had previously indicated that this was a possibility.

Since the end of last year, a liberal bill has been on the table in the House that broadens the basic interest rate and introduces a general tax exemption on all income from movable property and capital in exchange for the fidelity premium, the Open Vld Chamber faction recalled on Monday. “Higher interest rates and equal treatment for all savings and investment products, that is what we want,” says MP Vincent Van Quickenborne.

Today, savers can count on a tax exemption for the first 980 euros they earn on their savings. The Liberals want to add this to the benefit for returns from shares of 800 euros and apply that to every savings or investment product. In this way, all savers receive the same exemption of almost 1,800 euros, Van Quickenborne explains.

The former Minister of Justice emphasizes that funds that are already in a savings account or invested should not experience a negative impact. In passing, he criticizes the very successful government bond that Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) issued last year. “He can still issue six new government vouchers, as long as there are no structural reforms as we advocate, interest rates will remain too low,” says Van Quickenborne.

State Secretary for Consumer Affairs Alexia Bertrand, a party member of Van Quickenborne, is also in favor of abolishing the mandatory fidelity premium, she tells De Tijd.
